Measure N campaign kicks off
Supporters aim for $76 million library bond on November ballot
The campaign to pass a $76 million Palo Alto library bond in November officially kicks off Sunday with an event at the Main Library on Newell Road.Supporters of Measure N will pick up lawn signs, get books signed by local author Firoozeh Dumas and hear speeches by Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss and state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto.
The Better Libraries for Palo Alto campaign gets under way with close to $80,000 in the bank, said chairwoman Alison Cormack. Its ultimate goal is $120,000.
"We're seeing widespread grassroots support," Cormack said.
The plan to rebuild the Main, Mitchell Park and Downtown libraries likely will need all the support it can get to attain the two-thirds majority required for passage. A similar measure in 2002 fell short, with 61.4 percent voting "yes."
Polling on Measure N earlier this year showed 65 percent approval. The campaign is "optimistic" it can change enough minds to bump that figure past 67 percent, Cormack said.
The kickoff will party will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Main library lawn, 1213 Newell Road.
