Man gets 14 years in molest case
A 27-year-old Menlo Park man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for molesting and raping his niece over a two-year period, starting when she was 7 years old, prosecutors said.Miguel Angel Esquivel pleaded no contest to the charges against him May 29. He has been in police custody on $1 million bail since his arrest Jan. 17. He'll be eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of his sentence.
Esquivel had been living with family in East Palo Alto during the period in which he repeatedly molested and raped the young girl, said San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Prosecutors also believe Esquivel threatened to kill his niece, her mother and grandmother if he didn't get his way.
The girl's stepbrother, Edgar Hernandez, 21, also pleaded no contest to one count of a lewd act with a child and received a three-year sentence Aug. 8. Hernandez fondled the girl during the same two-year period, Wagstaffe said.
Both could have received stiffer sentences, Wagstaffe said, but the girl's family didn't want to traumatize her further by putting her on the stand.
