Red Cross makes new appeal for Bay Area blood donations

The American Red Cross is again urging eligible blood donors to help rebuild blood supplies in the Bay Area following the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The Northern California Blood Services Region of the Red Cross, which provides blood products to patients in 31 Bay Area hospitals, has just more than a one-day supply of most blood types, and extremely low levels of Type O.

The Red Cross says a three-day supply is considered adequate for meeting ongoing and emergency needs, particularly of Type O blood.

"Shortages of Type O can be very dangerous," Jay Winkenbach, the regional blood services CEO, said in a prepared statement. "O-negative is the blood transfused in the majority of emergency situations when a person's blood type isn't known. Those transfusions can often make the difference between life and death."
