Suspect arrested in party shooting
Police arrested a suspect Thursday in a shooting last weekend at Martin Luther King Community Center in San Mateo.Sullivan Gayden, 29, was taken into custody about 9:30 a.m. at a home in Merced, San Mateo police said. Police had tracked him there with the help of Merced investigators.
Gayden, a Burlingame resident with ties to Hayward, is suspected of having walked into a community gathering shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday at the King center, located at 825 Monte Diablo Ave., and opening fire with a handgun, striking a 36-year-old victim several times. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
San Mateo investigators issued a warrant for Gayden's arrest on
Monday.
The investigation into the shooting, which occurred during an annual reunion of former black residents of San Mateo, remains open.
