Art and Wine Festival begins this weekend

The latest in organic and eco-friendly products will be among the 250 craft booths that will pique people's interests at the Millbrae Art Wine Festival this weekend.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday along Broadway, between Victoria and Meadow Glen.

For the past three years, the two-day event has made being green a priority.

This time it's no different, said Lisa Charney, chairwoman of the festival.

"We're trying to clean up our community and make it a better place for the youngsters," she said Tuesday. "We want to make sure they have a safe and environmentally-sound community to grow up in."

Green and organic vendors include: Solar City, Cascadian Farm, Earthbound Farm and Renewal, which specializes in energy-efficient replacement windows and doors.

Attendees are encouraged to use public transit and bicycles to reduce carbon emissions and congestion.

Free shuttles will run every 20 minutes from the Millbrae BART/Caltrain station.

Drop-off points for the festival will be on Victoria Avenue at Broadway and Taylor Boulevard at Broadway.

The festival's organizers said recycling will be easy this year.

Beer will be served in biodegradable cups; and containers for glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard and mixed paper will be placed throughout the grounds.

According to Tim Beeman, the festival's spokesman, 1,500 wine and margarita glass bottles are expected to be recycled, along with 4,000 plastic bottles of water and soda.

Because close to 100,000 people are expected to descend on downtown Millbrae, hundreds of pounds of compostable food scraps are expected to be collected as well.

Meanwhile, nine bands will entertain this weekend's crowds.

The Mills High School Dragon Team will perform a traditional dragon dance to open the festival. Accompanying them will be the Shinnyo Temple Taiko Drum group of Burlingame.

For children, the Kids' Playland and the Kids' Stage have returned.

The festival is also hosting Blood Centers of the Pacific Bloodmobile to increase donations.

Festivalgoers will be able to give blood after going through a screening process. The bloodmobile will be in the parking lot next to Office Depot on Broadway.
