BREAKING NEWS: Pilot who died was Redwood City resident

The pilot who died Thursday afternoon when his small plane crashed into a Las Vegas neighborhood was 38-year-old William John Leahy Jr. of Redwood City, his family confirmed today.

Leahy, a professional long-distance pilot, had just taken off from the North Las Vegas Airport on his way to Palo Alto when he reported engine trouble in the twin-engine Piper Navajo he was transporting, authorities said.

He tried to return to the airport but crashed into a house about half a mile short of the runway.

He was the only person on board.

Five people were in the house when the plane crashed into it, but none was injured, said Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
