'Compost fire' breaks out at landfill
CalFire copter helps with water drops
A "compost fire" erupted late Wednesday afternoon at the Palo Alto landfill, spewing clouds of gray smoke over the city and its neighbors to the south.Several fire engines responded to the fire, reported at 5:14 p.m., and a CalFire helicopter joined the fight, dumping water onto the blaze.
The cause of the fire wasn't immediately clear. The Palo Alto Fire Department issued an automated alert shortly before 8 p.m. advising residents of a compost fire burning at the city dump and to limit their exposure to the smoke.
Traffic on nearby Highway 101 slowed as a result of the blaze and curious passers-by paused on surface streets to take in the scene. From a hilltop at Byxbee Park, firefighters could be seen dousing a pile of debris.
Authorities could not be reached for additional information about the fire by the Daily News' press deadline Wednesday.
